Press release 2010-10-27
Agreement signed with Varian Medical Systems C-RAD AB with its three fully owned subsidiaries are all active in the field of radiation therapy. The companies have signed an agreement to interface the C-RAD contour scanning systems to the radiation therapy systems of Varian Medical Systems. Varian Medical Systems, Inc. is the world´s leading manufacturer of medical devices and software for treating cancer and other medical conditions with radiation therapy, radio surgery, proton therapy and brachy therapy. The company supplies informatics software for managing comprehensive cancer clinics, radiation therapy centers and medical oncology practices. The C-RAD Sentinel system today can be used with Varian linear accelerators for auto set up when positioning the patients. The new agreement will make it possible with the Sentinel system to control the beam of the Varian linac systems when doing so called respiratory gating. The Sentinel systems offer unique capabilities to monitor both thoracic and abdominal movements. Respiratory gating offers a solution by synchronizing beam delivery to the patient´s breathing. The beam will be turned on only when the target is in the correct position according to the treatment plan. This enables more dose to be delivered to the target volume while sparing surrounding healthy tissue and protecting organs at risk. Respiratory gating functionality to integrate with the Varian linac systems will by C-RAD be launched middle of 2011. The information will be included in the Varian price book. Erik Hedlund, CEO, C-RAD AB: "The agreement with Varian Medical Systems is a major step in the development of the Sentinel system for use in advanced radiation therapy and will give access to the large installed base of Varian systems. The first modules with functionality for respiratory gating have already been sold to the market."
